Regenerative Almonds

3-Year Progression in Regenerating Almonds in California.

Conventional to Regenerative

Since 2020, we have worked with a wide range of Almond growers across different regions of California on large scale (>10,000 acres).

There have been over 10 large growers involved in the program and they had many similar challenges.

  • Increasing Fertility budgets
  • Declining Quality
  • Market Saturation
  • Increased pesticide
  • Marginal Production
  • Metals Stress
  • Hull Rot
  • Mite Pressure
  • Saline Stress

Increased Yields

Through Apical laboratory analysis, our almond trial blocks were diagnosed to have a range of nutrient imbalances in plant and soil. Primarily from lack of available Calcium, excess Magnesium, and in most cases salt or metal (Aluminum) toxicity.

By rebalancing the nutrients on both micro (liquid feeds) and macro (bulk amendments) we were able to achieve approximately 15-25% increase in yield above grower standards consistently on trees already producing over statewide average.

Decreased Pesticides

Growers complained that they were in danger of being shut out of some of their markets due to shifting MRLs and the danger they faced from incoming regulatory changes.  Due to this they needed to shift their pest management practices in mite prevention.

Through a combination of using soft chemistry pesticide options, relief of abiotic stress during hot months, and adding stress relief program in the form of mineral and biological amendments, growers have been able to achieve from 15-65% reduction in their pesticide costs.

Increased Quality

Due to declining soil fertility, many of the growers complained about individual nut size decline in their almonds year over year.  Apical testing revealed a significant Phosphate shortage in the soil, and plant.

By adjusting the growing protocols primarily in the dormant and early stages of lifecycle growth, the growers were able to achieve an average of 20- 35% weight increase over the conventional standards. Much of these gains are attributed to precision nutrient management revealed by Apical methods.
